Fujitsu / PFU LIMITED PaperStream IP / Scanner Issues.

The scanner driver installation found at
http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/fi/software/ps-ip-twain32.html
can encounter significant problems in certain situations.

Install Issues
Ensure the programs that are set in the HKLM run keys can run correctly.  If they are not properly initialised for any reason then the Adobe Acrobat Scanning functionality can be impacted.

USB Port Connection Issues
The scanners do not behave as expected if they are not presented to exactly the same USB port as the scanner was originally connected to. If the scanner is unplugged and plugged into a different USB port it will not function as expected. The correct port can be found by trying each port in sequence. Do not rely on the appearance of the device in the Devices and Printers windows. It may appear as a device, but not function on all ports except the original port.

Below is the relevant passage from a forum post here which explains why this occurs.

“This is a known "feature" of Windows. Unless the device contains an unique ID string
(aka "USB serial number") Windows can't tell that it is same device in a different usb port.
Fujitsu just slashed few cents on manufacturing by not providing this ID.”

The documentation directs users to install the software, reboot and then connect the scanner. However, testing has shown that the scanner comes online correctly, without a reboot, even if it is ON and connected during the installation.

App-V 5 and network executables

Firstly just don't. But if you have to...

This post relates to issues encountered when attempting to publish and launch App-V 5 applications which are on network locations.

This article
https://packnowledge.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/launching-a-network-executable-inside-an-app-v-5-virtual-environment-2/ discusses a situation where providing the machine account with access to the network resources can resolve an error which appears when attempting to launch the application:

TargetFileName.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to
close the application.

However in a recent scenario a resolution was not found. Here the application exe target had been moved from an actual Windows 2000 server share where launching worked fine, to a share on an enterprise storage system which used isilon OneFS.  Unsuccessful attempts to resolve it included creating a test share on the isilon OneFS system with completely open permissions and also restricting the network protocol to SMB (not SMB2 or 3). More info here
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2696547

Before it was even possible to carry out a launch, the application would only publish IF the drive mapping to the share was disconnected or deleted.  If the drive mapping was connected to the share then publishing would fail with the following responses (errors).

publish-appvclientpackage : Application Virtualisation Service failed to complete requested operation.
Operation attempted: Publish AppV Package.
Windows Error: 0x3A - The specified server cannot perform the requested operation
Error Module: Share Component. Internal error detail: 8DC022250000003A.

This was observed in 5.0 SP2 HF4, 5.0 SP3 and 5.1

The App-V package was simple in that it consisted of only a shortcut to the exe file on a drive mapping and an ini file in the windows folder.  Appsense Environment Manager was used instead to deliver a shortcut and copy the ini file to the users Windows 7 virtual store.

Handbrake output is poor quality, distorted or scrambled.

This fix resolves and issue where output from Handbrake is very poor quality.  It could also be described as badly distorted or scrambled.  It looks like a kind of codec issue.  This article explains how to fix it.

Essentially obtain this 64-bit version  http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.11/win64/libdvdcss-2.dll

and copy it to

C:\Program Files\Handbrake on a 64 bit system.

OneDrive for Business not syncing files

Had a really annoying time recently trying to get OneDrive for Business (ODFB) running on a Windows 8.1 PC with OneDrive (personal) running.

Any new empty folders would be synced but files either on the  PC or already in the cloud would fail.  A red cross appeared and viewing the sync problems would completely unhelpfully display Credentials Needed.

After scanning forums on the issue I tried the below in various order and numerous times.
  • Changing the time zone on the ODFB settings to match the client
  • Deleting C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw and C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache
    Followed by
  • Killing groove.exe msouc.exe msosync.exe
  • Getting rid of all the Generic User Credentials for the logged in user.
  • Signing out the Office 2013 apps from the Office 365 account.
  • Rebooting.

Nothing worked so I shut down and went to bed.  A day later I booted the machine up and was shocked to see ODFB working and OneDrive with an error and not synced!

It turned out that somehow (probably due to my messing around above) the local machine account in Windows 8.1 had lost its association with the personal microsoft account which is used to supply the built in OneDrive with credentials.  I simply reassociated the local machine account with the peronal microsoft account and OneDrive was then operating.  Both were working at the same time.

So I don't know exactly how I fixed it but I did eventually.

Clone to your hearts content. Your VM SIDs can be the same.

I was bought up believing machine SIDs must be different or the world would end one day.  No one new why or when but it obviously would.  If all your machines have the same SID it is just asking for trouble right?  Well no.  It turns out it is actually not a problem at all.  But don't take my word for it.  This chap really knows what he's talking about.

I've posted this item because I've read it before but I always fret about cloning things for no good reason.

Inspiration 9.2 IE on App-V 5.0

Inspiration 9.2 IE Appears straightforward but there are various considerations.
The setup program calls .\Net Support\Workstation support.exe which installs an application specific PDF printer object called Inspiration 9 PDF Driver which is derived from a NovaPDF 7 install.  The Inspiration software has an Export to PDF File item in the file menu which directly uses the specific printer object.  If the printer object is not present the attempts to use Export to PDF File produce a message: "The Inspiration PDF export driver is not installed. Please reinstall Inspiration before trying this operation."
Inspiration can print to other PDF printer objects in the normal way.

.\Net Support\Workstation support.exe also prompts the user to go and install QuickTime in order to "use Inspiration's multimedia capabilities" ooooo multimedia.

To deal with the QuickTime issue.  Download the  QuickTimeInstaller.exe and copy out the AppleApplicationSupport.msi and QuickTime.msi ready to run during the sequencing.

Training Videos on the help menu will not work if the RSTP protocol is blocked.

Appsense can be used to disable the (File) Export to PDF File, (Help) Register Online and Get QuickTime menu items.

Application settings are managed in files in the roaming profile.  Appsense personalisation can handle these if required. {CSIDL_APPDATA}\Inspiration Software\Inspiration IE\9.2

Sequencing
  •  When you do the sequencing run let .\Net Support\Workstation support.exe run and create the printer object before you start sequencing.
  • The start the sequencing install and install the two apple MSIs
  • Run the Inspiration 9 IE Installer.exe use defaults and skip the obvious bits re QuickTime and the printer
  • Install the App to the strange default C:\ProgramData\Inspiration 9 IE
  • Enter the Licensing Name, Organiastion and Serial Number
  • Click the Do Not Register
  • Close the app.
Delete the quicktime and any other unwanted applications in the shortcuts and FTA tab before saving.  The QuickTime functionality for inspiration is left intact and videos can be inserted and played back as required.

Windows 10 and Office 365

This article is composed of links to pages relevant to a project Windows 10 / Cloud project

If you are using the Microsoft Windows Media Center (MC) in Windows 7 or 8 carefully consider your timeline to Windows 10.  MC is removed during the upgrade from the earlier operating systems!  A Windows DVD player app is available if an upgrade is detected.  If not it, could be a separate purchase.

MS uses the term SKU(s) to refer to the different O365 license types e.g. E3 vs E5 SKUs
SKU is a term derived from the retail sector and in an acronym for Stock Keeping Unit.

TurningPoint 5.1.1.3052

Type: Client App
Pacakge: Appv-5 SP2 Sequence
Settings: Appsense

On the face of it this is a simple application which is designed to run from the user profile.

The exes and controls were moved to more conventional program files folders for sequencing.
There is a boot turningpoint.exe program which hands control to .\application\turningpoint.exe
A turningpoint.exe.settings file is a text based file saved in the same folder as the .\application\Turningpoint.exe
One of the main functions of the interface is to launch MS Powerpoint with an addin loaded.  To achieve this the application writes the powerpoint addin keys, launches powerpoint, then deletes the keys.  HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\PowerPoint\Addins\_TurningPoint5.Connect

Certain conditions caused Powerpoint to launch without the addin which caused the Turningpoint.exe application to hang.
The solutions were to exclude HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\PowerPoint\Addins\_TurningPoint5.Connect from Appsense personalistaion.  It was also found that

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\PowerPoint\Addins\OneNote.PowerPointAddinTakeNotesService needed to be present in the real registry to prevent some strange Appsense Personalisation/Profile/Virtual registry effects which produced inconsistant launching of powerpoint with the addin.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\PowerPoint\Addins\OneNote.PowerPointAddinTakeNotesService was therefore written by an Environment Manager (EM) rule prior to launch.  The Turningpoint.exe.settings file was also managed by EM to provide a default settings version. This prevented the EULA from displaying at first launch.

The "Allow all named objects to interact" and "Allow all COM objects to interact" are required to avoid an error
<path>\TurningPointShim_x86.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

App-V 5.0 and AutoAudit 5.6.2.1

AutoAudit stores data in databases including documents of various formats including Word.  It also interoperates with Word with addins.  It took extensive testing of sequences to find a working configuration for the virtual application.  Word was installed locally in this case.

With App-V 5.0 SP2 sequences one type of word macro document would open correctly with one set of Advanced settings (Com and Named) but another type would not. Various SP2 settings could enable the macro functionality to work but no combination would enable ALL of the various macro documents to work.

Eventually it was discovered that an SP3 sequence without the COM and named advanced settings worked on both SP2 and SP3 clients.

AutoAudit note: the default settings can be set in the App-V package, however if you have Appsense you can just finish the sequence after the install and use Appsense Environment Manager to write the required default keys into the virtual registry. Personalisation can manage any addition settings or connections which the users adds.

Other complications arose from how the app handled its macro resource files AR13579.aot BD2468.aot  These files are copied by the application into the folder set in the application regkey WORD_TEMPLATES_FOLDER.  By default this value is set to the same value as HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\14.0\common\general\UserTemplate

If this folder location is on a network location, say a home drive, then the folder must be listed in the trusted locations and AllowNetworkLocations must be on.  Consider using a policy location to avoid clashes occuring with user set locations settings.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\AutoAudit\Primary]

"WORD_TEMPLATES_FOLDER"="C:\\SET\\TO\\VALID\\FOLDER\\FOR\\USER"
"WordExcelOpenPointLink"="0"

YouTube clips on Hyper-V machines

Error occurred on Windows 7 Hyper-V guest on a Windows 8.1 Host.

If you attempt to play a YouTube video on a direct connection to a Hyper-V virtual machine instance an error will occur:

"An error occurred please try again later"

Vague?!

The suggested list of thing to try is predictably unhelpful.

The problem appears to occur because Hyper-V virtual machines do not have any virtualised sound hardware.

Using a RDP connection to the guest unexpectedly enabled the video to play because the sound was configured in the RDP client to "Play on this computer"

Further infomation here.

Shutdown

Really? A blog on the shutdown command? Why's that then?

Because you can't remotely shutdown a Windows 8 PC over an RDP connection using the interface - you have to use shutdown. I know I know - leave it.

Remember this as Force a Restart in 10 seconds
shutdown /f /r /t 10

How to create a photo album/link in Google+ and email it to people

Wow this is annoying.

Google obviously want everyone in the world on Google+ so that is why this is so annoying to do.

To create an album of pictures and then send the link to the album to others - who don't necessarily have Google+ - do the following.

Get the pictures into your Google+ photos area using your preferred method - Google Drive sync / Autobackup / manual upload etc

  1. Login to Google+ and go to All Photos.
  2. Select the pictures or videos you wish to put into an album.
  3. Click Share and Enter an Album Name in the Create an album box.
  4. Enter your email address in the To: box.
  5. This creates an album which you can then share via a direct link.
  6. Go to Albums and select the album name
7. Click the down arrow and choose sharing options
  8. Locate the Share via Link and generate the link which you can then email to anyone.  They will be able to view the album without a Google+ account.

Windows 8 Media Center DVD player might not work with Hyper-V services enabled

Windows 8 Media Center DVD player might not work with Hyper-V on.  While Hyper-V capability is enabled Media Center produces the following message if playing a DVD is attempted

Cannot Play DVD
The DVD may be in use by another application. If all other applications are closed, the video resolution may need to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the DVD.
This occurs when Hyper-V services are activated.  Hyper-V services is the other application which is holding the DVD drive in use.  You can verify this by deactivating / reactivating Hyper-V and checking the behaviour.  To deactivate/reactivate Hyper-V carry out the following in an elevated command window:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

restart the machine to apply the setting.

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

Notice also that this problem is not codec related because Media Center is still capable of playing any DVDs which may have been ripped to the hard drive.

I have two machines of this type but only one of them has this issue so it is likely there is another factor involved.

RunVirtual Key may finally be the answer in App-V 5 SP3

RunVirtual enables App-V packages to run on locally installed applications e.g. add-ons

Set the new registry subkey’s value to the PackageId and VersionId of the package, separating the values with an underscore.

Syntax: <PackageId>_<VersionId>

Example: 4c909996-afc9-4352-b606-0b74542a09c1_be463724-Oct1-48f1-8604-c4bd7ca92fa

The application in the previous example would produce a registry export file (.reg file) like the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Client\RunVirtual] @="" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Client\RunVirtual\MyApp.exe] @="aaaaaaaa-bbbb-cccc-dddd-eeeeeeee_11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555

SP3 finally seems to have this all covered off.  Imagine there are 3 different addons for 3 different users.  One app can only have a relationship with one GUID string so a connection group is required.

According to the SP3 doc link below the users will only get the individual App-V packages in the connection group - the ones they are entitled to and not the ones they are not supposed to have.

FINALLY !

SP2 related - it still wasn't *total* nirvana when this was written though.

Another reason why you need SP3.

Sequence an addon in SP2 - say a lovely ActiveX control with a shortcut to launch IE pointing to the relevent website.  Deploy, test and marvel at your wonderful package.

Now close your IE session and start a normal IE session which is just running normally.  NOW try your lovely package - ain't gonna work is it? cause it gives you a some kind of IE session spawned from the original.  Your ActiveX control is no where !  SP3 might sort that out for ya.

SCCM 2012 Configuration Manger Console may require the MDT

Could not load file or assembly file:///C:\Program Files (6)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminConsole\bin\Microsoft,BDD.CM12.Actions.dll’ or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

The above occurs because files named Microsoft.BDD* are not present. These are not installed by the SCCM Admin Console installation but by the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). The files then have to be copied over to the required folder shown in the error message

KMS

Key Management Service (KMS) clients use DNS to locate a KMS server.  The DNS entry is a SRV type  with a name of _VLMCS

slmgr /dlv on the client to display the license information and which server has been selected for KMS.

this command queries the DNS for the KMS server addresses.
nslookup -type=SRV _vlmcs._tcp.<forward lookup zone>

Use cscript slmgr.vbs to get screen text output.  The default just pops up text windows which can be useless if there is a lot of text.

More information here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793434.aspx

Some Microsoft products which are volume licensed use KMS servers to activate. Office 2016 is an example run the following to check the activation status.

change directory to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16
run

cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus

Internet Explorer update fails with error code 9C59

This post refers applies to a failure of Internet Explorer (IE) to update from a previous version; in this case IE9 on Win7 SP1.

The automatic update repeatedly failed apply the update to IE10 and later IE11 and logged update failures in the the update history:
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 9C59

Significant time was spent attempting to assess how this error could be solved.  During troubleshooting the Windows Features window was discovered to be blank and it was surmised that this was the actual cause of the update failure, as IE 9 is considered a feature of Windows and is on this list of features.  Instead of attempting to solve the update failure attention turned to solving the blank Windows Features window as arguably this was even more serious than a failing update.

Initially blogs and guides recommended using system file checks as sfc /scannow and DISM commands described here http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-resource-protection-found-corrupt-files note DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth is not a valid command at least on Win 7 SP1.

While researching DISM the system update readiness tool (SURT) was discovered http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 It is a large download "Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu"

This system update readiness tool solved the blank Windows Features.  After applying it the features were available in the display again.

Running the Windows Update to apply the IE11 update was then successful.

Remember to reboot after installing the SURT.

DISM = Deployment Image Servicing and Management

Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2010 SP2 partial install of excluded features

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39667

There is a bug in Microsoft Office 2010 SP2 released 22/7/2013 which results in the incomplete installation of some features even if they have been specifically excluded from the installation by the Office Customization Toolkit (OCT).

Without SP2, excluded features do not install.  However if the SP2 msp files (specifically officesuiteww-x-none.msp) are put into the Updates folder, then the problem occurs. An SP2 install to the original release installation also exhibits the effect.

It can be particularly problematic because the Access application feature installs file associations but not a complete application.  .accdb files appear to have associations but launching access results in the error

Can't find Language DLL msmain.dll

The publisher application feature MSPUB.EXE is also incorrectly installed when the feature is disabled in the OCT.  This results in this error
Publisher failed to start correctly last time.

The issue is discussed in the thread here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-office_install/office-2010-sp2-partially-installs-access-2010/9bb56acf-d48a-4244-b9ee-cda4e66fe58c

Workarounds:
The features can be installed then uninstalled in Programs and Features which properly removes them.

If packages are not downloading to the cache as expected, check the CAS.log file to verify the valid DPs have been identified.

CAS.log entries like "The number of discovered DPs(including Branch DP and Multicast) is 0"
and
ContentTransferManager.log entries like "Received empty location update for CTM job..."

These messages may indicate that the client is operating in a network location where no boundary group has been assigned!

W2008 and W2012 administrator file access issue.

While setting up a W2012 server a strange effect was observed where local user members of the local administrators group were unable to access files permissioned with the local administrators group.

The exact cause was not determined however a similar situation is discussed here.

The solution was to create the File Administrators Group as suggested by the original poster on the above thread.
